特聘教授,美国寄生虫学会杰出贡献奖“Henry Baldwin Ward Medal”获得者,2018-2022年4次入选Web of Science的全球高被引科学家。1990年获美国缅因大学博士学位。1991至1993年在美国俄亥俄州立大学从事博士后研究。1993至2017年在美国疾病预防控制中心工作,先后任副研究员和研究员。2018年全职回国工作。现任Clin Microbiol Rev(IF=20.6)、Front Microbiol Microbiol(IF=4.3)和Parasitol Res1 Res(IF=2.1)的副主编,以及J Clin Microbiol、Appl Environ Microbiol、Vet Parasitol和Exp Parasitol等6个SCI期刊的编委。主要从事人兽共患寄生虫病的病原生物学、检测和溯源研究。
学术贡献如下:(1)建立了隐孢子虫属的虫种命名标准,命名了人和家畜的8个常见虫种,改写了该属只包含1个广宿主虫种的历史;(2)发现大多数虫种具有宿主适应性,即每个虫种只感染一些特定宿主,且感染人的常见虫种只有5个;(3)进一步建立了集溯源和致病风险评估于一体的方法,成为International Water Association的标准方法;(4)建立了虫种区分和亚型鉴定工具,成为疾病暴发调查的首选方法,发现了引起暴发的高毒力亚型,创建了世界上唯一的寄生虫病主动监测网络系统CryptoNet;(5)解析了隐孢子虫病在发展中国家传播的独特性,揭示了隐孢子虫宿主适应性和毒力的遗传决定因素,并筛选了潜在的药物和疫苗靶标。以上工作有助隐孢子虫的动物源头防控,保障人体和水质安全,减少隐孢子虫病暴发。发表SCI论文500篇,被引30000次,H指数90,是隐孢子虫领域论文被引次数最高的作者,也是贾第虫、毕氏肠微孢子虫和环孢子虫研究领域排名前几名的作者。其他科学家以肖立华的名字命名了一个隐孢子虫虫种(Cryptosporidium xiaoi),以肯定他对隐孢子虫领域的贡献。主编CRC Press出版的英文专著《Cryptosporidium and Cryptosporidiosis》和《Biology of Foodborne Parasites》。
